Off to market we go!

Disclosure: this is a paid review

Inspired by the intrepid Yobbo, I’ve signed Catallaxy up to Review Me.com. I figure we market advocates should put our money – or at least our politics – where our mouths are. That means, along with Google’s ads, we’re in the process of developing a market base for the site.

The idea behind Review Me.com is that advertisers pay bloggers to review their products; the site itself acts as a central clearing house to bring bloggers and advertisers together. Bloggers don’t have to review the products they’re asked to review, but if we choose not to bother, then we don’t make any folding stuff. Advertisers also control how much they’re willing to pay for a review, and what sort of blogs on which they want their products to appear. The bigger the blog, the more it costs, although it helps if the blog in question has writers in more than one country. Catallaxy is in a good position to make this system work – we have a stable of writers with different interests, and two of our staff writers live in the US.

Review Me.com also updates site statistics monthly, which means blogs are given a chance to grow, and – in our case – we’ll be rewarded as our link base recovers from the great September Catallaxy Server Crash. Similarly, advertisers and bloggers are matched in terms of their interests and knowledge.

I’ve designed our profile on the Review Me.com site to cover technology, media, law, politics, economics, science and music. Our flagship categories are technology and books, so with any sort of luck, we’ll expand our libraries as well as fatten our wallets. Admittedly, as with all but the biggest blogs, at this stage the money we earn will represent handy pocket money. It’ll take some time, I think, before advertising starts to migrate from the MSM to the blogosphere in sufficient quantity to allow any of us to make a living doing this stuff.

We haven’t asked people to donate to us, but there is a simple way Catallaxy’s readers and friends can help us earn more money from this gig. Link to our site. Get rid of the old badanalysis links that no longer work, and make sure you’re linked to catallaxyfiles.com. And visit us, too – somehow Review Me.com monitors traffic as well as links, which is good for those days when we find ourselves getting Crikied or Australianed.

So off to market it is. We’ll see how we go from here…

  2. Back when I had a sports blog, I was rather surprised to find the Brookings Institution in Washington writing to me to ask me if I would like to review their foray into sporting scholarship, comparing baseball vs soccer as both a sport and a business.

It was a good book and I was happy to promote it, and I just love getting freebies.

  3. That’s the idea, Scott. And I figure between us we should be able to review most books – and if someone wants to pay us between US$50-125 a pop, even better!
