A Role for Student Unions to Build Social Capital for Fun and Profit

with 20 comments

There appears to be a concern in the progressive student socialists collective aka the students union that some poor students are supplementing their other sources of income with sex for money on the side. This is depicted as a problem but it could be seen as an opportunity. With some lateral thinking and entrepreneurial flair you can imagine an integrated global combine catering for a wide range of wants and needs, returning money in large quantities to the student workers in the scheme and to the student union to fund their own activities, whatever they may be.

The idea is for the union to actually move into the business instead of complaining about it, starting with a simple brothel to cater for the bottom end of the market, the basic, no frills, revolving door or “in and out” trade. But from that point it becomes more interesting and diverse, starting with escort services. The point is to regard the whole venture as a contribution to social capital as well as bank balances. So the escorts would be matched with clients to maximise educational and social gains from the transaction (positive externalities?) – students of languages with clients of appropriate nationality, students of commerce with merchant bankers, students of education with Vice Chancellors and other university administrators, etc.

It would help for marketing to come up with a pleasant and catchy name for the business, “Rent a Root” is not quite what we are looking for, but you get the idea… The next move is into the celebrity market, starting with AFL stars, but spreading in all directions from that point to recruit all kinds of big names in sport, stage, screen, politics and the arts. Some of the celebrities would not even need to undress – can you imagine how much some people might be prepared to pay to be able to say “I did it in a room where Les Murray was sitting in the corner, writing a poem!”.

I imagine that some society ladies would pay a pretty penny for some intimate time with their favorite sporting star – this could be arranged with complete discretion or alternatively a full battery of print and TV media coverage could be organised, also the option of internal video recording for a permanent record of the experience. The video recording opens up some potentially lucrative income streams but good legal advice would be required on this arm of the business. And of course the female stars would not lack bankable value, this would be an equal opportunity employer.

A partnership with IMB the International Marketing Group would be the way to go there.

The enterprise could move into the broader field of brokerage and trading in erotic services to support good causes, using international drawcards. With the right kind of publicity this could be a sought-after opportunity (kept in short supply, say once a year) for public spirited superstars. With some high rollers in the bidding, a night with Paris Hilton or Bono could probably fetch enough money to fund the whole annual research budget for some of the less trendy diseases. “This year I am doing it for cancer of the scrutum”.

I appreciate that a number of problems could arise, most obviously the unfitness of a socialist combine to run a diversified, multinational conglomerate (the saying ‘couldnt organise a root in a brothel’ comes to mind) and it would probably end up as a discount bordello surviving on subsidies from State Labor governments. But a modest blogger can dream…

  3. Yep. I thought it looked like c8to’s work until I looked at the name. What really threw me is that there was no mention of either what Bill Hut, or Popper thought about it. 🙂

  4. the major problem of course is whether it is right or wrong.

And of course it is wrong.

  5. Geez, Rafe. At least Yobbo’s honest enough to provide illustrations. Next you’ll start telling us you read _Policy_ ‘for the articles’.

But a modest blogger can dream…

Free market soft-porn. Just when I thought I’d heard about every degrading fetish, I’m again shocked by the hollow depths of human depravity.

  6. Rafe has this in mind.

Rafe it’s already been tried and looks like it is succeeding. The barrier to entry for most consumers is the price. Some of these gals want 10 big ones for one hour

  11. FFS Liam, a little bit of light banter and a link to a perfectly legal website and we’ve ‘descended’? And what about LP where people post non-worksafe pictures in the comments threads?

Oh yeah I forgot, if it’s arty and avant garde and doesn’t make money for anyone it’s OK.

You’re such a whinging hypocrite, Liam.

  12. “You’re such a whinging hypocrite, Liam.”

    Whiney is more appropriate.

I think it’s the beret and the turtle neck, jase. The kid is choking himself to death by not letting blood flow to the brain properly. It’s a tragedy in the making.

  14. Let’s not talk about that site anymore, rog, Liam might get upset.

Also don’t ever use the word ‘Left’ in a sentence again or he’ll start bawling his eyes out.

  15. It’s the turtle neck and beret, jase. The brain injury as a result has turned him into a big howling mary.

Talking about Mary. Laime reminds me of the Mary’s retarted brother in the movie , “Something about Mary”.

Remember the retarded brother went ape shit if someone touched him on the head. Laime has the same problem with the word ” left” . It sends him into a girly frenzy. So from now on be kind to Liame and refer to the left as the non-right.

  20. And here I was when I started reading this thinking that Rafe was making a serious post.

But seriously – it could create a number of employment opportunities not just directly, but indirectly in all the support functions… jobs for commerce students in keeping the books, marketing jobs… even work for visual arts students in developing advertising material.
