Classy op-ed writing

with 7 comments

Over at Thoughts on Freedom, John Humphreys reveals that he’s won a major South Korean essay writing competition. He’s posted his winning entry here, and I recommend you go read him. His piece shows – in my view, and I did this stuff for a living for a good while – what good op-ed writing should look like, and why it is only a matter of time before the blogosphere takes over from the MSM, at least in its printed form. Carefully researched, his piece nonetheless wears its scholarship lightly, encouraging thoughtful reflection rather than simplistic abuse.

Go read.

  4. Nicely written and argued. A pity there are some things the sub should have picked out – “lead” should be “led”, and there are various apostrophes missing.

But congratulations to John for winning. Though his prize of going back to Korea will simply add to my jealousy of his travels. Bastard.

  5. Yair he’s a bit of a star is our John. Also lead and led can be the same – like read and red. The English language is like that.

  6. lead and led sound the same (sometimes) but they are not the same. Neither are read and red. The English language is like that. These are things subeditors are for, to let the auteurs do their thang and worry about the details for them. Nothing against John. He is an economist, after all 😉

  7. Yair you’re right ff. Normally it would be my job to fix that sort of thing (which is why my posts are always nice & clear), but these are Koreans who are giving JH a bunch of freebies, so pulling his head in is probably a good thing.

And the good blogosphere sites are excellent on this stuff – the MSM couldn’t give a shit.
