Rooted on the workshop floor.

When the Trotsky follower comrade Origlass wrote to obtain advice on the role of women in the class struggle, the Great Leader wrote back that “The female members should be rooted on the workshop floor”.

This turned up in Kenneth Gee’s recollection of his mispent youth as a communist. Gee commented that Trotsky was fluent in five langauges but was not up to date with Australian slang. This is revealed in a Ross Fitzgerald review of two memoires by ex-communists who became judges – Ken Gee in NSW and Ken Marks in Victoria, in the Review section of The Weekend Australian.

The Kenneth Gee book is warmly recommended as witty, informative and incisive, as readers of Gee’s contributions to Quadrant would expect. It certainly demonstrates the way that communism recruited from both the best and the worst of people. Still an important topic for research.
