Iran: Jack Straw speaks out

leave a comment »

The BBC World Service has posted a ten minute soundbite of UK Foreign Minister Jack Straw talking about Iran here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/programmes/newshour/ . I think that this gives a clear summary of the western position on Iran’s nuclear programme.
Straw also talks sympathetically about the reasons why Iran might want to pursue nuclear weapons. This, and his mentioning the Iranian quality of ambiguity in negotiations and relationships, while sounding a little like it was memorised from his Foreign Office notes, gives the interview an impressive depth.
When we are facing developments that are as troubling as those occurring this week, I find it to some extent reassuring to hear this sort of clear and well-informed thinking (for ten straight minutes, no less!) from a statesman so close to the heart of things.
