Fear of north

leave a comment »

I and Miranda Devine have at least one thing in common (though as a non-driver I rely on whereis.com more):

FOR CHRISTMAS, I was given a portable satellite navigation device and the effect has been nothing short of a miracle. I feel like the blind man in the Bible who could suddenly see after Jesus rubbed mud on his eyes.

Only the navigationally challenged can understand how limiting this disability really is. You exist in a perpetual spatial fog. Every trip needs spare time built in to account for the almost certain prospect of getting lost. Detour signs fill you with dread, every intersection represents the 50 per cent probability of taking a wrong turn, and the word “north” makes you feel faint.
