They just never learn

It wasn’t long after Family First’s Steve Fielding voted for the government’s VSU bill last Friday that he gained an insight into why the Liberals have been so determined to get the legislation through. Student protestors scrawled slogans on the window of his Mt Waverley office, and as I understand it from the news last night used the toilet to flood it. This kind of thuggishness is, unfortunately, standard operating procedure for the student left. The Liberals hope to minimise the use of intimidation as a political tactic by cutting off the funding of the organisations that practice it.

As they move into an environment in which they will have to persuade people to give them money you might think that the student left would try to be a little bit more respectable, in the hope of appealing to mainstream students. Instead, as The Sunday Age reports this morning,

Robert Nicholas, education officer for the Queensland branch of the National Student Union [sic – National Union of Students, NUS], said the vandalism of Senator Fielding’s office was a legitimate expression of students’ anger at the bill.

“He has made himself a political target by voting for the legislation so he’ll have to live with the consequences,” he said.

Some people never learn. I didn’t support the VSU bill for the reasons elaborated several times on this blog. But to NUS – which has never delivered anything of value to students and has no chance of surviving in its current form in a market environment – all I can say is good-bye and good riddance.
